Bus Industry Safety Council (BISC)

February 2nd 2008

The Bus Industry Safety Council is an organization of safety professionals in the intercity bus and motorcoach industry in North America.  The council is affiliated with the American Bus Association ABA, but membership in the council is not limited to ABA member companies and is open to all persons who are interested in and employed in positions promoting safety in the bus and motorcoach industry.  The BISC meeting was held on Feb. 1st & Feb. 2nd 2008 in Virgina Beach.  Riteway Bus Service, Inc. has been involved with BISC for a couple of years now and we are excited to be involved with helping shape safety in the bus & motorcoach industry.

The big discussion this weekend was the minimum training Requirements for entry-level Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators, Proposed Rule.  While all operators agree that driver training is crucial for bus & motorcoach operations,  the proposed rule must be looked at again or it could have negative unintended consequences for our businesses.

ABA Marketplace

February 2nd through the 7th is the ABA Marketplace.  The American Bus Association ABA Marketplace is in Virginia Beach, VA and is an annual event that features many networking opportunities for Tour Operators, Motorcoach Companies and DMO.  Myself and Riteway’s safety director, Dave Butcher, are members of BISC, Bus Industry Safety Council, and will be attending the meeting on Feb. 1st before the Marketplace starts.  Riteway Bus Service, Inc. is committed to providing the safest transportation in the bus industry so we feel that being part of the Bus Industry Safety Council lets our company voice our concerns and helps strengthen the overall safety in the bus industry.

Live from UMA Motorcoach Expo

January 17, 2008 and day 1 is finished at the UMA Motorcoach Expo!  Attended some good seminars today about various motorcoach topics.  In the morning session we heard from Mark from the Chairmen at the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board). The NTSB investigates accidents around the country and then makes recommendations to ultimately help prevent accidents in the future.  These recommendations help make regulatory changes, operating changes and  manufacturing changes related to the country’s transportation system.

The next presenter was Dave Hugel from the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).  He talked about several important issues related towards studying motorcoach fatigue and studying crashes of motorcoaches in a control study.   -rj

Live from the UMA Motorcoach Expo

I’m currently in San Franciso at the 2008 UMA Motorcoach Expo. Besides riding the trolly cars and going to Fisherman’s Warf we will be spending the next few days looking and talking motorcoaches! I know it doesn’t sound exciting to you, but that is what we do, at least for a couple hours and then go back to sight seeing! But really, if you care about motorcoach safety, motorcoach technolgy, motorcoach tours, motorcoach regulations or just like looking at cool motorocoaches the UMA Motorcoach Expo is the place to be. Some of the highlights this week will be MCI’s 75th celebration, going to the motorcoach seminars regarding the newest trends in the motorcoach industry and of coarse going across the Golden Gate Bridge. -rj

Gotta love Wisconsin Weather!

Fog, rain and tornados in January?!  You bet, it’s Wisconsin and you have to be prepared for anything.  As a transportation company we’re always looking at the weather and whats going to happen next so we’re prepared.  The discussions we’ve had with our drivers the last few days, as well as in December when we had lots of snow, is heavy on safety and defensive driving.   Yes, time schedules are very important to our business, but so is getting there in one piece – that means leaving early for your school bus route, airport pickup or casino getaway.  The overwhelming comments I hear on our radios during the past month… slow down & look out for everyone else!   Drive safely out there!
